The app has tripled its base in the last three months. Bluesky’s recent growth is similar to that of rival *Threads, which has been adding a million new users daily for several months.
Even though Bluesky is still significantly smaller than *Threads and X, its dynamics are surprising. The app has topped the App Store for the past six days and has been the top non-gaming app on Google Play for four days in a row, according to data analytics firm App Figures. One of the reasons for the increase was the dissatisfaction of X users (who don’t like that Musk supported Trump), which led to a surge in traffic for Bluesky on November 7, the day after the presidential election.
Bluesky is also actively differentiating itself from competitors with its app usage policies, such as a pledge not to use user-generated content to train generative AIs, as opposed to X’s new privacy policy allowing third parties to train AI models on users’ tweets.
