A social media bulletin board is sharing stories of people who came to work as usual only to find that their company’s Windows Server 2022 system had been upgraded overnight to Windows Server 2025, a nightmare experience for system administrators. It was posted on the news site Reddit.
Reddit user Fatboy40, who works at a small business in the UK, posted on November 5, 2024, “My Windows 2022 server was unexpectedly upgraded to 2025, oh my!”
In the thread, Fatboy40 wrote, “When I got to work this morning, something was a little weird. Upon further investigation, I discovered that our Windows 2022 server had either been upgraded to 2025 overnight or is about to be upgraded. By the way, I’m not ready to upgrade for various reasons and I don’t have the necessary licenses, so this was shocking, needless to say.
IT managers have to be cautious when upgrading the OS on their enterprise systems, as there are many considerations to keep in mind, including application and driver compatibility, licensing, support, and security settings. Mr. Fatboy40 was shocked because it was upgraded without his knowledge.
Fatboy40 works at a security companyHeimdalIt is said that the product was used to manage client server updates.
When Heimdal’s team immediately investigated the situation, it turned out that the root cause was not a defect in Heimdal’s product, but a misclassification of Microsoft’s update.
Specifically, the Windows 11 update distributed in October 2024, numbered “KB5044284,” was actually an upgrade to Windows Server 2025. In other words, OS “updates” and “upgrades” were all over the place.
Writing on Reddit, Heimdal’s manager Andrei Hinodache said: “Due to our limited initial footprint, it took some time to determine the root cause, but we now know that this issue was caused by the Windows Update API. Microsoft incorrectly labeled the Windows Server 2025 upgrade as ‘KB5044284.’
Heimdal estimates that 7% of its customers are affected by this upgrade issue. Heimdal immediately blocked KB5044284 to prevent further issues.
Fatboy40, who was busy dealing with the unexpected upgrade, said, “It seems like Microsoft screwed up and me and my team had to spend several days trying to restore it.I don’t think they will take responsibility.” However, I will check with my reseller to see if I can report this issue to Microsoft.”
