It has been reported that the latest model M4-equipped iPad Pro, which is the latest model at the time of writing, stops working (becomes a brick) when it is upgraded to iPadOS 18. Multiple users have experienced this problem, and Apple also released a statement to MacRumors, which handles Apple-related news, saying, “We are temporarily pausing the iPadOS 18 update for M4-equipped iPad Pros to resolve an issue affecting a small number of devices.”

According to a new report from MacRumors, Apple has shared a memo with authorized service providers stating that “an issue occurs when upgrading M4-equipped iPad Pros to iPadOS 18.” The memo also states that “a small number of M4-equipped iPad Pros are experiencing an issue where they cannot be turned on after upgrading to iPadOS 18,” and that “Apple is already working to fix the issue, and is preventing iPadOS 18 from being available on iPads that may be affected until the issue is fixed.”

The problem only affects M4-equipped iPad Pros, with affected users reporting that their iPads stopped working completely after installing iPadOS 18, or that their iPads shut off during the update process and would not turn on afterwards. Another user said, “I took it to an Apple Store, where they confirmed it was completely broken, but told me I needed to send it to an engineer before they would give me a replacement, even though I have AppleCare+.”

Apple advises its authorized service provider engineers to “force restart the device if they encounter a bricked iPad Pro.” It is unclear at the time of writing how long it will take for Apple to identify and fix the cause of the problem.
