Aurora appeared on December 7, 2024. It seems that you can use “Aurora” by opening the “Grok” tab on the official smartphone app or browser. Since there are options of “Grok 2 (beta)” and “Grok 2 + Aurora (beta)”, it seems that Grok was not equipped with an image generation function, but Aurora was implemented as an independent image generation AI.

Grok has a separate image generation AI called “Flux” integrated. The relationship between Flux and Aurora is unknown.

Aurora is good at generating live-action-like images, and users generated photos of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and others and posted them on X.

Some users report that Aurora generates the desired image in seconds, whereas it took hours with Midjourney.

A user generated an image with the prompt, “Create an image of Donald Trump eating a sandwich at an amusement park,” and said, “It’s incredible.”

Some users have created images of real people, such as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

It seems that it can also generate illustration-like images.

Technology media TechCrunch reports, “When I actually tried using it, it was impossible to take nude photos, but graphic content such as “Bloody Trump” was not specifically prohibited.”

Aurora’s origins are shrouded in mystery, and other than the staff at xAI, which develops Grok, posting “Congratulations on the release,” no other information has come out. It’s unclear whether xAI built Aurora on its own or worked with a third party like Flux.

X owner Elon Musk said only, “This is our internal image generation system. It’s still in beta, but it will improve soon.”
