MTS, using the MTS Travel travel service, analyzed Russians’ trips abroad in the summer of 2024. According to the data, China was in second place after the traditionally popular Turkey in the ranking of popular destinations abroad. The tourist flow to China increased by 75% year-on-year. MTS representatives told CNews about this.
Among the countries of the far abroad, Turkey remains the permanent leader in the number of trips by Russians. In the summer season of 2024, almost half, or 49%, of all trips to far abroad were to this country. China was in second place in demand among Russians – at the end of the summer season, its share in the tourist flow to far abroad was 8%. Over the year, the country overtook such resort destinations as Egypt and the UAE in popularity – in 2023, they occupied second and third place. At the end of the summer of 2024, Egypt took third place – its share was 7%.

Among the ten most popular destinations abroad, in addition to China, Thailand demonstrated active growth – compared to last summer, Russians traveled to the country 63% more often.
Demand for summer holidays in Southeast Asia, which includes Thailand, is growing rapidly in general. Over the year, the number of trips to this destination has increased by 72%. The most significant increase in trips by Russians this summer was in Vietnam, where direct flights appeared in February 2024. Thanks to simplified logistics, the tourist flow to the country jumped 3.7 times year-on-year. As a result, Vietnam rose from third to second place in the top popular countries in Southeast Asia, overtaking Indonesia. Thailand is in first place, accounting for the vast majority (71%) of trips to the region.
Another destination of distant foreign countries, where Russians began to travel more actively this summer, was Hong Kong. Compared to the last summer season, the demand of tourists for vacations in Hong Kong has almost doubled (+91%).
According to MTS Travel service, the total tourist flow abroad in the summer of 2024 increased by 10% year-on-year. The share of trips to non-CIS countries was 56%, the annual dynamics for this destination is +14%. Less pronounced growth was in trips to neighboring countries – by 4%.

Among the destinations of the near abroad, the number of trips to Belarus and Azerbaijan increased the most – by 20% compared to last summer.
Almost a third (32%) of all trips abroad in the summer were made by residents of Moscow and the Moscow region. The top 5 regions leading in trips abroad were: St. Petersburg (9%), Krasnodar Krai (6%), the Republic of Tatarstan (4%) and Sverdlovsk Oblast (3%).
Over the past year, residents of the Republic of Dagestan (+46% of trips), Rostov Oblast, Stavropol, Zabaikalsky and Primorsky Krais (+28%) have become more active in traveling abroad than others.
Methodology
The study was conducted by the MTS Travel travel service based on the anonymized MTS Big Data. Trips abroad in the summer seasons of 2023 and 2024 were taken into account. Trips that ended in Russia were analyzed. Trips lasting less than two days and more than 31 days were not taken into account in order to exclude transit and non-tourist visits to countries. Frequent trips to the same country were excluded.
