The European Union demanded that Apple open iOS

The European Commission is requiring Apple to open up iOS to “ensure better compatibility with third-party devices” such as smartwatches and headsets. Regulators say Apple must give third-party developers clearer access to iPhone features and improve its process for reviewing rejected requests.

Apple refused, saying the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) threatened user privacy. The company singled out *Meta, saying it made more requests for access to Apple’s sensitive technology than any other company. *Meta, which makes *Quest headsets and smart glasses, accused Apple of anti-competitive practices and resistance to interoperability.

The DMA requires Apple to share key technologies such as Siri voice commands and payment systems with other developers. Apple argues this forces it to share innovation while rivals such as *Meta, with privacy controversies, gain unfair advantages.

The European Commission could launch a formal investigation early next year.

*belongs to Meta, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and is banned.
