September 2024eventThe “jewels” that were mentioned are digital items that viewers of vertical live streams can purchase and can be used to send “gifts.”

A gift is an item that can be sent during a live broadcast to highlight it with animation, and the broadcaster who receives the gift can earn revenue in the form of “Rubies”. The profit of 1 ruby is 1 cent (about 1.5 yen), that is, 100 rubies is 1 dollar (about 150 yen).

The image used looks like this. First, the viewer purchases a jewel.

Then select a gift to send with that jewel.

By sending gifts, fans can show their appreciation to the broadcaster.

According to YouTube, the price of jewels changes depending on the campaign, so the amount of rubies you can earn also changes, and there is no fixed revenue portion. For three months after the implementation of Jewel, YouTube plans to pay eligible creators 50% of their revenue as a bonus, up to a maximum of $1,000 (approximately 150,000 yen) per month.

YouTube said, “In the coming weeks, we will be rolling out this feature to eligible creators in the United States who are participating in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) and have approved the Virtual Items module in YouTube Studio.”

YouTube has long been rolling out “Super Chat”, so-called superchas, and “super stickers” that allow viewers of live streaming to support the broadcaster, but in response to the popularity of TikTok LIVE’s gift function, Therefore, we decided to add a similar gift function.

One of the major differences between super stickers and gifts is that super stickers are mainly displayed in the chat field, whereas gifts are overlaid on the broadcast screen as well. Please note that super stickers cannot be used in streams where gifts are enabled.

For the time being, only users in the United States can purchase Jewels and send gifts, but all users can see the gifts sent.

Expansion to countries other than the United States has not yet been determined, and YouTube said it will make an announcement later.
